Sequence of the Week- Chris Ward
This week’s sequence is of …Lost team rider Chris Ward getting a deep draining barrel at backdoor Pipeline this past winter season on the North Shore of Oahu. Check out the sequence as Wardo gets shacked in a super hollow tube, then covered up once more before getting spit out onto the shoulder.
Wardo is no stranger to heavy barrels, or being in dangerous positions in general, just ask anyone who has had the pleasure of adventuring with him, or the Morro bay harbor coast guard! Thanks to Tupat the “ultimate grueler” for following Chris around all winter and getting sequences like this.

DAY FOUR UPDATE: Well it’s official. We now have two US Opens. This one reminds me of how the US Open in Huntington USED to be, when you saw many companies down on the beach jockeying each other to try to do the most creative advertising, capture the most attention or generally make the most impact with the thousands of potential consumers (kids) that are looking for a good time. This was all apart of HB before the Nike era, when a company came into our action sports industry and basically bought their way into cool. Ironic how one coast has a winner which gets $100,000 and another has a team rider getting $3500.
Heck even, the extra “hip”retro longboarders that Vans paid just to show up were getting $4000 for first place. (I thought contests weren’t hip anyways?) The overall event was really great to be apart of as most of the people on the beach had never been to something that big before. Skate vert ramps, FMX demos and twin stages with bands and bikini contests. There was even a large section down the beach for skimboard competition and tournament ‘cornholers’. I highly recommend booking your ticket for next year as this is a sight you’re going to want to see firsthand! We’ll see you there!
Special thanks to D and the entire crew from Costal Edge for growing the event and making it possible!
– CHECK BACK WITH US NEXT WEEK FOR AN ENTIRE VIDEO RECAP!
DAY THREE UPDATE: Yesterday was the peak of the turkey season. Every funny, crazy, and amazing thing you can imagine seeing on the beach… was down here. First street at Virginia Beach brings all kinds of oddities, and there was some good surfing mixed in there as well. The surf was solid and overhead (another oddity), the weather was hot, but not death scorching. All in all, the day was great! Tens of thousands collected themselves along the shoreline to all get a look at each other.
It seems like many of these teenagers were intense/frantic for one reason or another, and when I asked one of the contest organizers why we were seeing so many fights and angry kids he replied, Monster energy. Makes sense. Gorkin is looking good for another title as a few of our other hopefuls got knocked out of competition. Anyway, everyone is coming down the home stretch as Sunday is the last day of fun and usually symbolizes the near end of Summer here in VB. A full report will be filed Monday and next week we’ll see an amazing video wrap up of all the shenanigans. Check the newly updated photos, which are only a fraction of everything that is here to see!
DAY TWO UPDATE: It’s getting hot in here.. You would think they couldn’t cram any more kids into one spot, but it seems they’ve come from near and far… and very far to check out this years ECSC. Our team rider Ian Bloch lost out in some wind driven sloppy surf so he spent the rest of the day spray painting peeps with the crew…(poor guy). The main mens division kicks in tomorrow morning. There was a really shit house tow at session today but a few kids were able to throw a punt or two. We’re all taking a breather before the big party tonight, then ready for another round battle tomorrow.. Keep checking back to see if your friends made it onto the web photo gallery..or just to find stuff you like to look at!
DAY ONE UPDATE: We really don’t consider Wednesday the first day, even though the first heats of surfing started then.. Ian Bloch made it through some heats today, but most of our better surfers are seated till Saturday. Gorkin spent his lay day helping us spray stencil anything that moved, while Nick Guillarte and Jody Davis ran point on the two tents. Ultimate stud and staff employee Chad Shetler rocked the DJ responsibilities and was nicknamed ‘the Champ of Stamps’.
The stirred up crowd got into some fights, including a couple girls captured in the photo section mid brawl! A total of about 30,000 peeps must have either been stamped, spray logoed or just filtered through the fun today..and it isn’t even the weekend yet! The crew at Costal Edge have grown this thing into a full blown circus, rivaling that of the US Open. If you’re anywhere near here you got to get down for the next few days, but if you’re stuck somewhere else, check back online to see how our the shenanigans and if Gorkin goes on to defend his title!

Shop of the Week- McKevlin’s
Mckevlin’s at Folly Beach, SC. Is not known for licking the sweat off the big corpo companies’ you know whats; as they sell out to department stores he drops them. Mckevlin’s supports …Lost being his top seller. Also – the Washout down the street and McKevlin’s were host to some of the best 2003 and 2004 Lost Surf Jams. 100 kids on the beach waiting before Sunrise and a three foot tall kid walks up “Is Dustin Ray here?” (he was). “Well good cuz it says in the Decline that if I beat him I can be on the team!”
Oh- and the hottest girls hands down were at the Folly Beach …Lost Girl searches. They all can be seen at McKevlin’s throughout the summer not to mention year round over in Charleston at the colleges. This shop is one of the east coast’s biggest …Lost surfboard dealers and has been with us since Randall and Chicken and Wardo (at 15) were packing orders. Tim Mckevlin has been on a campaign against POP OUT surfboards ”SURFTECH” since the first one popped out of its molded coffin. He was bashing the pop outs and protecting real boards by real shapers since Biolos started his campaign to get foreign boards properly marked and tariffed.
Just look for the NO POP OUT stickers all over his town with a 6′ sign on the side of his shop. Keep it up guys…
Matt “Mayhem” Biolos and Aaron “Gorkin” Cormican will be at McKevlin’s Monday August 23rd for Shaper’s night from 4-8 pm. Check out the full blog story about the Shaper’s night event here

MATT BIOLOS WINS TRIBUTE TO THE MASTERS SHAPE-OFF

MATT BIOLOS WINS TRIBUTE TO THE MASTERS SHAPE-OFF
Photos: PHOTOMURRAY.COM. For the complete photo gallery CLICK HERE
8/16/2010: Yesterday Matt Biolos won the Tribute To The Masters Shape-Off at the Sacred Craft Surfboard Expo in San Diego. Basically six shapers (Pat Rawson, Brian Bulkley, Larry Mabile, Jason Bennett, Michael Barron and Matt Biolos) were given a hour and half to replicate an early 80’s Simon Anderson thruster. Simon Anderson then picked the un-signed board he thought was the best replication of the original. The official press release is below but here is what we remembered.
After two days of binge drinking and sleeping on other people’s hotel room floors we stumbled to the upstairs of the San Diego Convention Center with Gorkin and some of the boys to watch Biolos hand shape the Simon thruster. He was in the middle of the convention center inside a small transparent box measuring a piece of foam and already beginning to sweat. The box was surrounded by a mass of people that included legendary shapers like Rusty Preisendorfer and Reno Abellira as well as younger shapers like Ryan Sakal and Jason Bennett. It seems hard enough to replicate a surfboard by hand in 1:30, let alone do it in a fishbowl with your colleague/competitors watching your every move. The lighting seemed to be bothering him to the point where he began putting tape over some of the lights or he would walk the board out of the box and into the light of the convention to try and get a better look. It was so bad he said, “Eventually I started closing my eyes and shaping by feel.” He finished in time and then it was up to Simon.
At the award presentation Simon said the winning board was, “quit a bit superior to the others primarily because the deck curve was more accurate.” After Matt was announced the winner he donated the $1,000 to charity, we all cheered and then he said “I’ve always been a fan of Simon Anderson, always a fan of 80’s thrusters and 80’s designs. I grew up surfing in the 80’s.”
San Diego, CA (August 16, 2010) — – Surfboard craftsman Matt Biolos bested five other shapers to win the Tribute to the Masters Shape-off honoring Simon Anderson presented by US Blanks during the Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo on Sunday. Biolos, the head shaper behind LOST Surfboards, competed against a field of stellar craftsman which included Pat Rawson, Brian Bulkley, Larry Mabile, Jason Bennett and Michael Barron. Biolos’ name will be etched onto the Mike Marshall perpetual trophy and Biolos also received $1000, which he quickly offered to a local charity.
“This is a bit of redemption for me, as I am sometimes pegged as a guy who is only known for his marketing expertise, and maybe I don’t get credit for my shaping ability,” said Biolos in front of a large crowd on Sunday at Sacred Craft. “It is real honor to win this event, as Simon Anderson is a true legend.”
“Matt’s board was the clear winner and an easy choice, as the deck and nose rocker were spot on, and the bottom curve exact as well,” said judge and tribute honoree Simon Anderson. “Of course all the boards were exceptionally shaped, and I am very honored to have these six great craftsman turn out for this event, it means a lot to me.”
