6/26/13: The tip of Baja is a long way from San Clemente but for some reason Chris Ward decided to drive to the 2013 Los Cabos Open of Surfing this year. We, on the other hand, opted for the quick flight down with Mason Ho and the rest of our crew that consisted of the band Tunnel Vision and some crack marketing experts. Of course we couldn’t let Chris go alone and he wouldn’t let us let him go alone so he enlisted 2002 WQS San Miguel Champion Matt King and current Ghetto Juice cover boy Daniel Shea. Kinger was on board right away but it took a little convincing for D.Shea to go. They made it all the way to Cabo but as of writing time they are still driving somewhere in Baja on their way back. Anyways here’s some pics from our little experiment in anthropology. Taken by Daniel Shea and Joe Alani. We have probably 100 photos and we’ll be adding more and more all day so keep posted.
Chris Ward and his dog Maka about to cross the border into Mexico. Note his special way of tying the boards down to the head rest of the seats.
Ward looking angry at Matt King… this happens a lot. These two have actually both won the WQS contests in Baja. Both won San Miguel.
Ward’s car stranded on the side of the road after he blew out a tire. He didn’t think a spare was really a necessity when driving the entire length of the Baja Peninsula so they had to wait hours for help to come. He rationalized the small miscalculation by stating he was tired and needed to sleep on the side of the road anyways.
It takes Chris approx an hour to pack all his stuff after a surf session with this rig. Waves were small on their way down.
All set and ready to get back on the road and make it to the tip.
Meanwhile Kevin Sullivan and Mason Ho take the easy route and arrive in Cabo via airplane.
Ahhh… the troubles of being a pro surfer. Mason making the difficult decision of what board to ride.
Mason Ho, Kai Barger, Granger Larson and friends get ready for a little warm up session.
The waves weren’t exactly pumping in Cabo but Mason seems happy.
Kai Barger spinning backside at Zippers.
Mason about to throw a little reverse on a crumbly Zippers lip.
Hawaiians always snap. Mason Ho snapping at Zippers.
Mason throwing a little slob air at Kai Barger.
Mason scouring the Zippers parking lot in anticipation of Ward’s arrival.
Wardo coming in hot… literally. He showed up in the middle of the night from his drive down Baja sweating from the Cabo heat.
Of course we had to go across the street to the bar to cool him down.
The next day Ward headed out to the East Cape to score some Shipwrecks.
And he could be found in the water laying down carves like this…
And airs like this…
But a lot of the time he could be seen on the beach doing this…
Some carves, airs and a few beers and you’d have a smile like this too. For a pro surfer he doesn’t look too concerned his sponsor’s sticker is falling off.
And on the other side of town but in the same boardshorts (Glo Stripe by the way) Mason Ho gets ready to take a trip to the tip of Baja. He is literally going to the southern most point of the peninsula.
It’s a long walk to the tip and the boys had to stop for a beer. Mason stays cool in the shade with his “Pelagic” model …lost surfboards. Meanwhile our host Toby Lehman grabs a beer.
It’s not only a walk but you have to take a boat too.
The boys arrive.
Mason is entranced by the place.
And Mason is entrancing at the place…
Sequence: Daniel Shea
The video guy had a few beers.
It’s that hot in Cabo.
