CHUNK OF FOAM CHALLENGE – NEW PICS

The Chunk of Foam Challenge took place May 17th-18th during The Boardroom show at Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego. Four shapers (Kelly Connolly, Chris Christenson, Hank Warner, and Mike Estrada) were asked to replicate the original …Lost 5’5″ x 19 1/4 Round Nose Fish (made famous by Chris Ward and Cory Lopez) from within a chunk of surfboard foam within a three-hour time limit. The winning shaper, Chris Christenson, was picked by Matt Biolos and Cory Lopez and received $500 and $500 worth of foam from US Blanks. Check out all the photos below from the event.

The Chunk of Foam Challenge takes place this weekend (May 17th-18th) during The Boardroom show at Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego. Four shapers (Kelly Connolly, Chris Christenson, Hank Warner, and Mike Estrada) will be asked to replicate the original …Lost 5’5″ x 19 1/4 Round Nose Fish (made famous by Chris Ward and Cory Lopez) from within a chunk of surfboard foam within a three-hour time limit. The winning shaper picked by Matt Biolos will receive $500 and $500 worth of foam from US Blanks. In the winter of ’96/’97, while everyone was riding 6’1″ thrusters featuring Slater’s elf shoe rocker, and long before the “retro” fish craze, two kids attacked the North Shore and beyond on 5’5″ twin fins. The subsequent action and other oddities ended up being patched/edited into the 1997 …Lost movie 5’5″ x 19 1/4 and other oddities… Those two kids (Chris Ward & Cory Lopez) will be in attendance this weekend for all the action. Also, come by the …Lost booth to see all the latest surfboard models and screenings of 5’5″ x 19 1/4.

RULES OF THE CHUNK OF FOAM CHALLENGE:
- Four shapers.
- Each shaper will receive three hours in the shaping bay.
- No template.
- No pre-fab rocker.
- No modern measuring devices.
- No measuring the board.
- 90 seconds to fondle the original board.
- Can not touch the original board during the 3 hours.
- They may use only one power tool of their choice.
- A hand saw.
- A 10″ piece of string with a nails at each end.
- Hand sanding devices and finishing tools.
