14 year-old Bajan Dane Mackie took first place in the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 divisions at the final event of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club event held at South Point on the Island of Barbados on January 29th. Check out the full story on the contest from EASTERNSURF.COM. Little Dane's been dominating the island comps of late and plans on taking his game to the US mainland this year. Adrenalinesun.com caught up with Dane for an interview. Check it out below along with some photos and video.
As one of the junior surfing powerhouses coming out of Barbados, Dane’s surfing skills speak for themselves and recently at event #5 of the BJSC Burkie Junior Surf Series, he stamped his dominance on the competition by winning every division that he entered.
Adrenaline Sun linked up with 14-year old Dane and he gave us some insight to his surfing as well as a little coaching advice.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SURFING?
I surfing at the age of 10.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO START SURFING?
My brother, Bruce Mackie, is a great surfer and was competing and doing extremely well at the time. He was sponsored by Quiksilver and so I decided to try it.
HOW REGULARLY DO YOU GET IN THE WATER?*
I surf everyday, once there are waves. During the week when I’m at school I surf from 4:00 p.m. until dark. During the weekend I could spend as much as 5-7 hours surfing a day. I am lucky as I live in Atlantic Shores (Christ Church, Barbados) and ‘South Point Break’ is a short walk for me.*
WHAT ARE THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS IN YOUR CAREER?
One of the most memorable moments in surfing was at the Ripcurl Finals in Puerto Rico where I had earned a spot in the Grand Finals through my performance at the New Smyrna Rip Curl Gromsearch 2010 for the 12 & Under Division. I made it to the National Final and placed 4th overall. This event was held in conjunction with the Ripcurl ASP Pro and it was unreal hanging out and surfing alongside some of the top pros in the world, like Mick Fanning, Jordy Smith, Dane Reynolds, and Brett Simpson. In addition, I have had many excellent results at overseas contests which led me to be offered sponsorship from LOST Enterprises which was fantastic. Shortly after, Arnette approached me as a sponsor which I accepted proudly. Locally, I am sponsored by JADA Group.
WHAT DO YOU DO BEFORE A SURF COMPETITION?
I surf the break that the contest is being held at.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS?
Not really. I try to remain focused and concentrate on what I have to do.
HOW DO YOU CONSTRUCT WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO IN EACH WAVE DURING A COMPETITION?
I don’t think about what I am going to do. It falls into place as I ride the wave.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE TRICKS ON THE SURFBOARD?
Air Reverse and Pop Shove-It.
WHERE ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS TO SURF IN BARBADOS?
Tropicana, Soup Bowl and South Point are definitely my favourite spots in Barbados.
WHERE ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS TO SURF IN THE WORLD?
Salt Creek and Lower Trestles, California. There are other surf spots I hope to surf one day!
IF I WANTED TO LEARN TO SURF, WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU WOULD TEACH ME?
I would teach you how to stand on the board in the correct position.
EARLIER THIS YEAR, YOU DID A SURF VIDEO. TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THAT AND CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE ANY OTHER VIDEOS BEING RELEASED BY YOU?
My brother Bruce produces the videos – Brahh 1, Brahh 2 and Brahh 3 which I am featured in along with Danny Edghill and Bruce Mackie. I have also produced a video recently of myself.
GIVE ME AN IDEA ON YOUR COMPETITION SCHEDULE THIS YEAR.
I will be heading to Cocoa Beach for the Ron Jon Easter Pro Am during Easter and straight on to the ISA World Junior Championships in Panama. I hope to compete during the summer on the east coast of the USA at the Ripcurl Gromsearch, ECSC Pro Am, Makka Pro Jamaica and other contests.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR SPONSORS.
I am sponsored by LOST Enterprises with boards and product since mid 2011. I am also sponsored by Arnette and locally by JADA Group Limited. I am very proud to represent my sponsors and appreciate their assistance.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS… CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE YOU GOING PRO?
I would like to go pro but also want a good education. I have set my goals to be an engineer and I hope I can balance both in the years to come.*
