After a long grueling week of surfing the Men’s final came down to San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino vs Brasil’s Alejo Muniz. Kolohe came out hot with a two snap combo and big air to start the final but it was Alejo who strung together the best two scores. Both surfers were riding boards shaped by Mayhem but we had our obvious favorite. Here is Matt Biolos’ take on the final, “Well I must admit that when we ended up with both competitors of the men’s final on Mayhems, I of-course was rooting for Kolohe. That said, when the judges awarded Alejo the victory, it was absolutely the most bitter sweet win of my shaping career.. Congrats to Alejo and huge huge proud props to my main man Kolohe Andino for stepping up on the biggest stage in surfing and showing the world the future of professional surfing”. What wasn’t bitter sweet however, was Carissa Moore winning the Women’s WCT and regaining the #1 ranking in the race for the world title. Photo: surfingmagazine.com/Sherm.

Christopher Ward caused one of the upsets of the contest when he took out Gabriel Medina. Don’t tell him it’s an upset though. His bag of tricks is indeed deep. Photo: surfline.com/Rowland/ASP.

Julian Wilson put on some great performance throughout the event. A highlight was this backside full rotation air he pulled in the early rounds. Photo: surfline.com/Damea Dorsey.

Oh ya, there was small riot following the final. Most of the riff raff probably didn’t surf but at least one of them was wearing our “Couch Surfer” boardshorts. We think he was just trying to get out of the way. Surely no surfers took part is such mayhem.

can you imagine if the police busted out the riot gear and shut down city blocks in Time Square or Las Vegas Strip because a bar fight and some rowdy kids? never. i hope there is an investigation. this probably could have been stopped. interesting how the police are avoiding the media in the aftermath. so so so so so many people hassled and teargassed unnecessarily.
